Product Description
Product Description
Pine plywood is a phenolic-bonded exterior-grade panel built for packaging, logistics, and structural applications where a reliable, cost-effective sheet material is required. Produced with a full pine core and pine face veneer, it offers a practical balance of structural rigidity, weather resistance, and workability at a lower price point than birch-core alternatives. At 410–450 kg/m³, it is lighter than birch or eucalyptus panels while still providing adequate load-bearing performance for the packaging and furniture applications it is primarily specified for.
Description of Production Features
The panel is manufactured using phenol-formaldehyde adhesive bonded to EN 314-2 Class 3, the highest bonding class under the standard. This makes pine plywood suitable for wet service environments, exterior exposure, and applications where the panel may be subject to humidity variation during storage or transport. The all-pine construction – same species throughout the core and face – produces consistent density and behaviour across the full sheet, which is important in packaging applications where uniformity affects cutting yield and structural performance of the finished crate or box.
Formaldehyde emission is certified to E1 class. The panel carries FSC, CARB, TSCA Title VI, CE, UKCA, and IHPA certifications, providing the documentation required for European and UK markets as well as North American import compliance. Moisture content is controlled at 6–10% and density is consistent at 410–450 kg/m³ across the available thickness range.
Characteristics
- EN 314-2 Class 3 bonding: Phenolic adhesive rated for exterior and wet service conditions.
- Lightweight structure: Density of 410–450 kg/m³ reduces finished package weight compared to birch or hardwood-core panels.
- Broad certification portfolio: FSC, CARB, TSCA, CE, UKCA, and IHPA compliance covers major European, UK, and North American market requirements.
- Multiple face grades: BB/C, CP/C, and C/C grades available to match application requirements from clean furniture surfaces to structural packaging panels.
- Sanded and not sanded options: Factory-sanded panels for furniture and finishing applications; unsanded panels for structural and packaging uses where surface preparation is not required.
- Consistent all-pine core: Uniform density throughout the panel thickness supports predictable cutting, routing, and fastening performance.
Sizes and Thicknesses Offered
Alvi-Bel supplies pine plywood in a standard 2440×1220 mm sheet format.
Available thicknesses include: 9 mm, 12 mm, 15 mm, 18 mm, and 21 mm.
This thickness range covers the most commonly specified gauges for packaging crates, pallet bases, furniture carcasses, and structural enclosures. Cut-to-size service is available. Contact Alvi-Bel to confirm current stock and lead times for your required specification.
Surface Types and Materials
Pine plywood is available in two surface conditions:
- Sanded – calibrated to a consistent thickness with both faces smoothed, suitable for furniture components, wall panelling, and any application where the surface will receive paint, primer, or a decorative coating.
- Not sanded – supplied with the face veneer in its natural pressed state, appropriate for packaging, logistics, and structural applications where surface appearance is not a requirement and cost efficiency is the priority.
Face grade selection depends on application:
- BB/C – medium-grade face with a low-grade back, suitable for furniture and interior fit-out where one side will be visible.
- CP/C – medium-low grade on both faces, appropriate for general structural use and packaging where a reasonable surface is required without the cost of a high-grade face.
- C/C – low grade on both faces, the standard choice for packaging crates, pallet decking, and logistics applications where structural performance matters and visual quality does not.
Areas of Application
Pine plywood is most frequently specified in packaging and logistics applications where phenolic-bonded exterior plywood performance is required at a practical cost. Its lighter density compared to hardwood-core panels makes it a common choice for export crates, industrial packaging, and pallet construction where total shipment weight is a consideration.
In furniture applications, sanded BB/C grade panels work well for carcass construction, shelving, and utility furniture where a smooth, paintable surface is needed without the premium cost of birch. For plywood for packaging requirements across a broader range of species and specifications, the full packaging category covers additional options.
Where exterior weather resistance is required alongside a film-protected surface rather than a bare veneer face, film faced plywood and WBP plywood are the appropriate alternatives.
Adhesive and Formaldehyde Emission
Phenol-formaldehyde adhesive provides full waterproof bonding throughout the panel. It maintains joint integrity through moisture cycling, temperature variation, and prolonged exterior exposure. Formaldehyde emission is within the E1 class range and the panel is CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI compliant, making it suitable for regulated markets in North America as well as CE and UKCA-compliant supply chains in Europe and the UK.
