Product Description
Product Description
Birch-faced poplar plywood combines the visual quality of a birch face veneer with the lightweight properties of a poplar core, producing a panel that is noticeably lighter than all-birch alternatives while retaining a clean, consistent surface suitable for furniture, joinery, and interior fit-out work. At 420–505 kg/m³, it occupies a practical middle ground between the density of birch-core panels and the very low weight of species like falcata – light enough to reduce handling effort and finished product weight, while still providing the structural performance expected from a furniture-grade interior panel.
The BB/CP face grade delivers a birch veneer surface with minor, well-distributed imperfections on the face and a serviceable back, suitable for painted finishes, lacquering, and applications where the face will be visible in the completed piece.
Description of Production Features
The panel is constructed with a birch face veneer over a poplar core, bonded throughout using ureic (urea-formaldehyde) adhesive. This bonding system meets EN 314-2 Class 1 requirements, appropriate for dry interior environments including furniture, cabinetry, and interior wall panelling. The combination of birch face and poplar core is a deliberate material pairing – birch provides the surface hardness and finish quality that furniture production requires, while poplar reduces overall panel weight without the structural compromise that comes from using poplar veneer on the face.
Formaldehyde emission meets E1 class and the panel carries CARB Phase 2, TSCA Title VI, PEFC, and CE certifications. This combination covers emission compliance for both European and North American markets and supports chain-of-custody sourcing documentation where required. Moisture content is maintained at 6–14% and density ranges from 420 to 505 kg/m³ depending on thickness.
Characteristics
- Birch face over poplar core: Clean, hard birch surface veneer with a lightweight poplar core – lower overall weight than all-birch panels without sacrificing face quality.
- BB/CP face grade: Medium-grade birch face suitable for painted and lacquered furniture surfaces where a consistent, workable veneer is required.
- EN 314-2 Class 1 bonding: Ureic adhesive appropriate for dry interior conditions across furniture, joinery, and fit-out applications.
- Broad certification portfolio: CARB, TSCA, PEFC, and CE compliance covers European and North American market requirements.
- Sanded surface: Factory-sanded on both faces, ready for direct painting, priming, or laminating without additional preparation.
- Wide thickness range: 6 mm through 30 mm covers thin decorative panels through to thick structural components within a single product line.
Sizes and Thicknesses Offered
Alvi-Bel supplies birch-faced poplar plywood on a standard 2440×1220 mm sheet format.
Available thicknesses include: 6 mm, 9 mm, 12 mm, 15 mm, 18 mm, 22 mm, 25 mm, and 30 mm.
The range from 6 mm to 30 mm accommodates light decorative panels, standard furniture carcass thicknesses at 15–18 mm, and heavier structural components at 25–30 mm. Cut-to-size service is available. Contact Alvi-Bel to confirm current stock and lead times for your required specification.
Surface Types and Materials
All panels are supplied and sanded on both faces. The BB/CP grade defines the face and back veneer quality:
- BB face (birch): Medium-grade birch veneer with small, sound knots and minor colour variation permitted. The surface is tight-grained and accepts paint, lacquer, and stain evenly, making it the working face for furniture, cabinet doors, and visible interior panels.
- CP back (poplar): The poplar back veneer is a serviceable grade appropriate for concealed surfaces – the inside of cabinet carcasses, the underside of shelving, and any face that will be installed against a wall or substrate.
The birch face sands consistently and holds fine detail well in routing and milling operations. The poplar core, while softer than birch, provides adequate screw retention for standard furniture joinery methods including dowels, confirmat screws, and cam-lock fittings.
Areas of Application
Birch-faced poplar plywood is primarily used in furniture production and interior joinery where the weight reduction offered by a poplar core provides a practical advantage. Cabinet carcasses, wardrobe bodies, shelving units, and drawer boxes all benefit from the lighter panel weight, particularly in flat-pack furniture where handling and assembly ease are design considerations.
In interior plywood applications more broadly, the birch face makes this panel suitable for wall panelling and built-in furniture where the surface will receive a decorative finish. For projects where the face veneer will also be a decorative element rather than a painted surface, birch plywood in a higher face grade provides a cleaner natural veneer appearance.
Where weight reduction is the overriding requirement and surface hardness is less critical, lightweight plywood covers panels with lower-density cores across various specifications. For applications requiring moisture resistance beyond Class 1 bonding, waterproof plywood provides the appropriate upgrade.
Adhesive and Formaldehyde Emission
Ureic adhesive bonds the veneer layers throughout the panel, providing consistent joint strength appropriate for dry interior service conditions. Formaldehyde emission is within the E1 class range and the panel is CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI compliant, making it suitable for regulated North American markets as well as CE-compliant European supply chains.
