Product Description
Eucalyptus plywood is not a panel that makes compromises. The eucalyptus species produces one of the denser and harder veneers used in commercial plywood production – at 510–600 kg/m³, this panel is noticeably stiffer and more resistant to surface indentation than birch/alder or pine alternatives at equivalent thickness. That density is the point. For flooring systems, packaging structures, logistics applications, and interior fit-out work where panels take sustained load and repeated mechanical stress, eucalyptus holds up where lighter panels begin to show fatigue.
The all-eucalyptus construction – same species throughout core and face – means no weak layers, no density variation between plies, and no differential movement under moisture. Phenolic bonding to EN 314-2 Class 3 extends the performance envelope to fully exposed exterior conditions and wet service environments, making this one of the more capable panels in the standard exterior plywood range.
Description of Production Features
Every veneer layer is eucalyptus, bonded under high pressure with phenol-formaldehyde adhesive. The phenolic system provides a fully waterproof joint that maintains integrity through moisture cycling, temperature variation, and the mechanical loading typical of flooring and logistics applications. Unlike mixed-core panels where a lighter species in the centre reduces overall stiffness, the all-eucalyptus core ensures consistent performance from face to face – relevant in flooring applications where panel deflection under load determines whether the surface above feels solid or flexible underfoot.
Formaldehyde emission meets E1 class and the panel carries FSC, CARB Phase 2, TSCA Title VI, CE, UKCA, and IHPA certifications – one of the more complete certification portfolios in the exterior plywood range, covering European, UK, and North American market requirements in a single product. Moisture content is controlled at 6–10% and density holds consistently at 510–600 kg/m³ across the full thickness range.
Characteristics
- High-density eucalyptus core: 510–600 kg/m³ delivers greater stiffness, surface hardness, and load resistance than lower-density hardwood and softwood alternatives.
- All-eucalyptus construction: Consistent density from face to face – no weak core plies, no differential movement, uniform performance across the full sheet.
- EN 314-2 Class 3 bonding: Phenolic adhesive rated for exterior exposure, wet service, and repeated moisture cycling.
- Comprehensive certification: FSC, CARB, TSCA, CE, UKCA, and IHPA – covers European, UK, and North American documentation requirements in one panel.
- BB/CP and BB/C grades: Medium face grade on both options – clean working surface for flooring and fit-out with a serviceable back for concealed or structural applications.
- Sanded both faces: Calibrated surface ready for direct installation, adhesive bonding, or coating without additional preparation.
- Two sheet formats: Available in 2440×1220 mm and 2500×1220 mm to suit different regional sizing conventions.
Sizes and Thicknesses Offered
Alvi-Bel supplies eucalyptus plywood in two standard sheet formats: 2440×1220 mm and 2500×1220 mm.
Available thicknesses include: 5.5 mm, 9 mm, 12 mm, 15 mm, 18 mm, 21 mm, and 24 mm.
The range opens at 5.5 mm – thin enough for overlay applications, protective surface panels, and lightweight structural enclosures – and runs through to 24 mm for heavy-duty flooring, structural decking, and thick packaging panels. The higher stiffness of eucalyptus means that 15 mm and 18 mm panels in this range perform closer to 18 mm and 21 mm birch panels in deflection-critical applications, which can reduce material cost per square metre when the specification allows for performance equivalence rather than fixed thickness. Contact Alvi-Bel to confirm current stock availability and lead times for your required format and thickness.
Surface Types and Materials
All panels are supplied and sanded on both faces. Two face grades are available:
- BB/CP – medium-grade eucalyptus face with a lower-grade back. The BB face has a tight, even surface with small repairs permitted, appropriate for flooring overlay panels, visible fit-out surfaces, and applications where the working face will receive a coating or direct foot traffic. The CP back is serviceable for structural and concealed surfaces.
- BB/C – medium-grade face with a low-grade back. The C-grade back is the practical choice for packaging, logistics, and structural applications where the back face is concealed or installed against a supporting structure and surface quality is not a factor.
The eucalyptus face veneer is harder than birch or pine at the surface level, which contributes to scratch and abrasion resistance in flooring applications even without an additional protective film or coating.
Areas of Application
Eucalyptus plywood sits in a practical position between standard exterior plywood and film faced construction panels. It has the phenolic bonding and moisture resistance of heavy-duty exterior plywood without the cost of a film surface, and the density and stiffness to handle applications that would exceed the structural capacity of lower-density alternatives.
In plywood for flooring applications, eucalyptus is specified where the subfloor will carry concentrated loads – commercial fit-out, retail environments, industrial floors, and mezzanine decking where a standard birch or pine panel would deflect more noticeably under point loads. The sanded face accepts floor adhesives and self-leveling compounds cleanly, and the phenolic bond tolerates the moisture exposure that occurs during installation.
For packaging and logistics, the C/C-equivalent back grades at higher thicknesses provide structural crate and pallet panel performance at a cost point competitive with pine alternatives, with the added durability that the denser eucalyptus core provides. For waterproof plywood applications requiring confirmed waterproof performance across a broader specification range, the waterproof category covers additional options. Where a film surface is required over an eucalyptus core, smooth F/F eucalyptus film faced plywood provides the appropriate upgrade.
Adhesive and Formaldehyde Emission
Phenol-formaldehyde adhesive provides full waterproof bonding throughout the panel. The joint maintains integrity through the moisture, temperature, and mechanical cycling typical of flooring, packaging, and outdoor storage environments. Formaldehyde emission is within the E1 class range and the panel is CARB Phase 2, TSCA Title VI, CE, UKCA, and IHPA compliant – covering regulated markets across Europe, the UK, and North America within a single certified product.
