Product Description
Product Description
Falcata interior plywood is a lightweight, high-quality panel produced entirely from falcata – a fast-growing tropical hardwood known for its exceptionally low density and consistent fine grain. At 300–400 kg/m³, falcata plywood is significantly lighter than birch or poplar alternatives, making it a practical choice for applications where panel weight directly affects the finished product, such as decorative packaging, CNC-routed components, and laser-cut parts. Despite its low weight, the panel holds its shape well and machines cleanly, with minimal tear-out on both face and edge.
Description of Production Features
The panel is manufactured with a full falcata core and falcata face veneers, bonded using melaminic adhesive that meets EN 314-2 Class 1 requirements for interior use. All layers are the same species, which eliminates the density variation and differential movement that occurs in mixed-core panels. This makes falcata plywood particularly consistent in CNC and laser processing environments where predictable material behaviour across the full sheet is important.
Formaldehyde emission is certified to E0 class – a stricter standard than the widely used E1 classification. E0 compliance makes this panel suitable for applications with elevated indoor air quality requirements, including children’s furniture, packaging for food-contact products, and enclosed interior spaces with limited ventilation.
Moisture content is controlled to a maximum of 14%, appropriate for interior conditions.
Characteristics
- Exceptionally lightweight: Density of 300–400 kg/m³ reduces finished product weight without compromising workability or surface quality.
- E0 formaldehyde emission: Stricter than standard E1 class, suitable for sensitive interior and packaging applications.
- Consistent all-falcata structure: Face, core, and back are the same species, producing uniform density and behaviour across the panel.
- CNC and laser compatible: Fine, even grain structure produces clean cuts, smooth routed edges, and accurate engraving without surface burning or fibre lift.
- Multiple face grades available: B/BB, BB/BB, CP/CP, and CP/C grades cover a range from decorative visible surfaces to structural or concealed applications.
- Sanded surface: All panels are factory-sanded, ready for painting, lacquering, or direct use without additional preparation.
Sizes and Thicknesses Offered
Alvi-Bel supplies falcata interior plywood on a standard 2500×1250 mm sheet format.
Available thicknesses include: 2.7 mm, 3 mm, 3.6 mm, 4 mm, 4.6 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, 15 mm, and 18 mm.
The range of thin-gauge options – from 2.7 mm upward – makes falcata plywood suitable for applications where standard 3 mm or 4 mm birch panels are too heavy or too dense for the process. Cut-to-size service is available. Contact Alvi-Bel to confirm current stock and lead times for your specification.
Surface Types and Materials
All falcata plywood panels are supplied and sanded on both faces. The surface grade determines the visual quality of the face veneer:
- B/BB and BB/BB – high and medium grades with a clean, consistent face suitable for painted or stained visible surfaces, decorative packaging, and display components.
- CP/CP and CP/C – medium and low grades appropriate for CNC routing, laser cutting, structural components, and applications where the surface will be processed or covered after cutting.
The falcata veneer accepts paint and lacquer evenly due to its fine, closed grain. In laser cutting applications, the low resin content of falcata produces less burning and residue than denser species, which reduces finishing time after cutting.
Areas of Application
Falcata interior plywood is used across two primary application areas. In plywood for laser cutting applications, the combination of low density, fine grain, and consistent core structure makes it one of the more reliable species for detailed engraving and through-cutting. CNC routing applications benefit from the same properties – the panel holds detail well and does not stress tooling the way denser hardwood panels do.
The second application area is decorative packaging, where low panel weight reduces shipping cost and handling effort without sacrificing structural integrity in the finished box or crate. For general interior plywood uses such as furniture carcasses, wall panels, and cabinet components, falcata provides a workable alternative to birch plywood where weight reduction is a design priority.
For projects requiring panels in the same thin gauge range but with higher surface hardness, laminated plywood in comparable thicknesses may suit the application better.
Adhesive and Formaldehyde Emission
Melaminic adhesive bonds the veneer layers in falcata interior plywood, providing consistent joint strength across the panel thickness. Formaldehyde emission is certified to E0 class, which is compliant with the most demanding European indoor air quality standards and suitable for enclosed interior environments, children’s products, and food-contact packaging applications.
