Product Description
Product Description
Birch/alder exterior plywood is a phenolic-bonded panel built for conditions where moisture resistance, structural stability, and long service life are required. The combination of birch or birch/alder face veneer with a birch/alder core produces a panel that performs reliably in flooring, interior fit-out, packaging, and logistics applications where standard interior-grade plywood would deteriorate over time. Bonded to EN 314-2 Class 3 – the highest bonding class under the standard – this panel is rated for use in fully exposed exterior conditions and wet service environments.
Description of Production Features
Phenolic (phenol-formaldehyde) adhesive is used throughout the panel construction, bonding each veneer layer under high pressure and temperature. This adhesive system is waterproof and maintains bond integrity through repeated wetting and drying cycles, temperature fluctuation, and prolonged exposure to humidity. It is the same bonding chemistry used in film-faced construction plywood, applied here to a birch/alder veneer structure for applications where a clean, workable surface is required alongside weather resistance.
Formaldehyde emission meets E1 class standards. The panel carries FSC, CARB, and TSCA Title VI certifications, covering chain-of-custody sourcing requirements and formaldehyde emission compliance for both European and North American markets. Moisture content is maintained at 8–12% and density ranges from 550 to 650 kg/m³, consistent with the structural performance expected from a birch-core exterior panel.
Characteristics
- EN 314-2 Class 3 bonding: Phenolic adhesive rated for fully exposed exterior conditions and wet service environments.
- Waterproof and weather-resistant: Maintains structural integrity through moisture, temperature variation, and repeated exposure cycles.
- Multi-certification: FSC, CARB, and TSCA Title VI compliance covers European and North American sourcing and emission requirements.
- Multiple face grades: BB/BB for visible high-quality surfaces, CP/C and C/C for structural and concealed applications.
- Sanded surface: Factory-sanded on both faces, ready for coating, painting, or direct installation.
- Wide thickness range: 6.5 mm through 30 mm covers light cladding panels through to heavy-duty structural flooring elements.
Sizes and Thicknesses Offered
Alvi-Bel supplies birch/alder exterior plywood in two standard sheet formats: 1250×2500 mm and 2500×1250 mm.
Available thicknesses include: 6.5 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, 15 mm, 18 mm, 21 mm, 24 mm, 27 mm, and 30 mm.
The range from 6.5 mm to 30 mm allows this panel to serve across light cladding, furniture, flooring underlayment, and heavy structural applications within a single product line. Cut-to-size service is available. Contact Alvi-Bel to confirm stock availability and lead times for your required specification.
Surface Types and Materials
All panels are supplied and sanded on both faces. Face grade determines the visual quality of the veneer and the appropriate application:
- BB/BB – high-grade face on both sides, suitable for visible surfaces in furniture, interior fit-out, and any application where the panel face will be painted, lacquered, or left with a natural finish.
- CP/C – medium face with a low-grade back, appropriate for flooring systems, structural panels, and applications where one face is visible and the other is concealed or installed against a substrate.
- C/C – low grade on both faces, suited to packaging, logistics, and structural applications where surface appearance is not a factor.
The birch and birch/alder face veneer accepts surface coatings consistently across all grades due to the tight, even grain structure characteristic of these species.
Areas of Application
Birch/alder exterior plywood is used across flooring, fit-out, packaging, and logistics applications where moisture resistance is a baseline requirement. In flooring systems, the phenolic bond and consistent thickness make it a dependable subfloor and structural deck panel – for dedicated flooring applications, plywood for flooring covers the full range of available options.
For packaging and logistics uses, the C/C grade provides structural strength at a practical price point, with the waterproof bond ensuring the panel holds up through outdoor storage and transport conditions. Where full waterproofing is the primary requirement across a broader range of panel types, the waterproof plywood category includes additional options by thickness and specification.
For exterior applications requiring phenolic film protection on the surface rather than a bare veneer face, film faced plywood and exterior plywood categories offer the appropriate alternatives.
Adhesive and Formaldehyde Emission
Phenol-formaldehyde adhesive provides the waterproof bond in this panel. It is the most durable bonding system available in standard plywood production and is specified wherever long-term moisture exposure is expected. Formaldehyde emission is within the E1 class range and complies with both CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI requirements, making this panel suitable for markets with strict emission controls on both sides of the Atlantic.
