Product Description
Product Description
Smooth F/F birch/alder film faced plywood is a phenolic-bonded construction panel with a smooth dark brown film on both faces, produced specifically for concrete formwork and structural shuttering applications. The F/F surface configuration – smooth film on face and back – allows the panel to be used with either face against the concrete pour, extending the working life of each sheet and reducing waste on site. The film surface releases from cured concrete cleanly with minimal residue, making it one of the standard panel types in formwork systems across European construction markets.
The birch/alder core provides the stiffness and load distribution required in formwork applications, where panels must resist deflection under the hydrostatic pressure of wet concrete without transferring that movement to the finished surface. EN 314-2 Class 3 phenolic bonding ensures the panel maintains structural integrity through repeated wetting and drying cycles across multiple pours.
Description of Production Features
Phenol-formaldehyde adhesive bonds each veneer layer under high pressure, producing a waterproof joint that performs through the demanding wet and mechanical conditions of active construction sites. The birch/alder core is consistent in density and veneer quality, which directly affects how evenly the panel distributes load across its face – an important factor in formwork where surface irregularities in the panel translate into surface defects in the finished concrete.
Smooth phenolic film is applied at 120 g/m² on both faces. Equal film weight on face and back means consistent performance regardless of which side contacts the concrete, and the panel can be turned over between pours to distribute wear evenly across both film surfaces. Film colour is dark brown, the standard for phenolic film faced formwork panels. Formaldehyde emission meets E1 class and FSC certification is available for projects with chain-of-custody sourcing requirements.
Characteristics
- Smooth film both faces (F/F): 120/120 g/m² phenolic film allows the panel to be used either way around, doubling effective working life compared to single-face film panels.
- Clean concrete release: Smooth film surface releases from cured concrete with minimal adhesion, reducing stripping time and surface defect rate.
- EN 314-2 Class 3 bonding: Phenolic adhesive rated for repeated wet service exposure across multiple pour and strip cycles.
- Birch/alder core: Consistent veneer density provides uniform stiffness and load distribution across the panel face.
- Dark brown phenolic film: Industry-standard finish for formwork applications, resistant to abrasion, alkaline concrete chemistry, and UV exposure.
- FSC certified: Chain-of-custody documentation available for environmentally specified projects.
Sizes and Thicknesses Offered
Alvi-Bel supplies smooth F/F birch/alder film faced plywood on a standard 2500×1250 mm sheet format.
Available thicknesses: 18 mm and 21 mm.
Both thicknesses are the standard specification range for concrete formwork panels in European construction practice. 18 mm is the most widely used gauge for wall and column formwork supported at standard joist spacing. 21 mm provides additional stiffness for wider support spacing or applications where panel deflection under concrete pressure is a concern. Surface Types and Materials
Both faces carry the same smooth dark brown phenolic film at 120 g/m²:
- Face side: Applied against the concrete pour surface. The smooth, closed film prevents concrete from bonding to the panel and produces a consistent finish on the cast surface.
- Back side: Identical film construction, allowing the panel to be reversed once the working face shows wear. Using both sides before retiring a panel significantly reduces material cost per pour cycle.
The phenolic film is resistant to the alkaline chemistry of Portland cement concrete and does not absorb moisture from the wet mix. After stripping, panels should be cleaned promptly to remove concrete residue before it hardens on the film surface, which extends the number of usable pour cycles per panel.
For applications requiring an anti-slip working surface rather than a smooth face – such as platform decking, ramps, or vehicle floors – wire mesh film faced plywood provides the F/W configuration on the same birch/alder core.
Areas of Application
Smooth F/F film faced plywood is the standard panel type for concrete formwork and structural shuttering in residential, commercial, and civil construction. Primary uses include wall formwork, column boxes, slab soffit shuttering, and beam sides where a flat, defect-free concrete surface is required after stripping.
Beyond formwork, the smooth film surface and Class 3 bonding make this panel suitable for site hoarding, temporary flooring, and protective surface applications where weather resistance and durability are needed from a flat panel. For the broader range of film faced plywood options including different core materials, film weights, and surface configurations, the full category covers available specifications.
Where phenolic bonding and exterior durability are required but a film surface is not necessary, exterior plywood and WBP plywood provide the appropriate alternatives. For flooring and fit-out applications within the same film faced range, plywood for flooring covers the relevant specifications.
Adhesive and Formaldehyde Emission
Phenol-formaldehyde adhesive provides full waterproof bonding throughout the panel construction. It maintains joint integrity through the wet conditions of active formwork use, including direct contact with wet concrete mix and repeated site washing. Formaldehyde emission is within the E1 class range, compliant with European requirements for occupied construction environments.
