Product Description
Product Description
Smooth F/F eucalyptus film faced plywood is a construction-grade panel with smooth phenolic or melaminic film on both faces, built on a eucalyptus core for applications where high panel stiffness and density are required alongside weather resistance. The eucalyptus core distinguishes this panel from birch/alder alternatives – eucalyptus is a denser, harder tropical hardwood that produces a stiffer panel at equivalent thickness, making it a preferred specification in heavy-duty formwork, infrastructure construction, and structural shuttering where panel deflection under concrete pressure must be kept to a minimum.
The F/F smooth film configuration – identical film on face and back – allows the panel to be rotated between pours, distributing wear across both film surfaces and extending the working life of each sheet on site.
Description of Production Features
The eucalyptus core is bonded using either phenolic or melaminic adhesive, both rated to EN 314-2 Class 3 for exterior and wet service conditions. Phenolic bonding provides the highest moisture and chemical resistance, appropriate for repeated concrete contact and site washing. Melaminic bonding at Class 3 offers comparable waterproof performance with slightly different surface chemistry, and may be specified depending on project requirements or regional availability.
Both adhesive systems produce a panel capable of withstanding the alkaline environment of wet concrete mix, the mechanical stress of stripping, and the moisture cycling typical of active construction sites. Smooth film is applied to both faces, providing a consistent, closed surface that prevents concrete adhesion and releases cleanly after each pour. Formaldehyde emission meets E1 class and the panel carries FSC, CARB, and TSCA Title VI certifications for sourcing documentation and emission compliance across European and North American markets.
Characteristics
- Eucalyptus core: Higher density and stiffness than birch/alder alternatives – reduces panel deflection under concrete pressure at equivalent thickness.
- Smooth film both faces (F/F): Identical film on face and back allows panel rotation between pours for even wear distribution and extended service life.
- Dual bonding option: Available in phenolic or melaminic adhesive to EN 314-2 Class 3 – both systems rated for exterior and wet service conditions.
- Clean concrete release: Smooth closed film surface prevents bonding to cured concrete, reducing stripping time and minimising surface defects on the cast face.
- Triple certification: FSC, CARB, and TSCA Title VI compliance for European and North American project documentation requirements.
- E1 formaldehyde emission: Compliant with European indoor air quality requirements for occupied construction environments.
Sizes and Thicknesses Offered
Alvi-Bel supplies smooth F/F eucalyptus film faced plywood on a standard 1250×2500 mm sheet format.
Available thicknesses include: 9 mm, 12 mm, 15 mm, 18 mm, and 21 mm.
The eucalyptus core provides greater stiffness per millimetre of thickness compared to softwood or lower-density hardwood cores, which means thinner gauges – 9 mm and 12 mm – can perform comparably to thicker birch panels in some formwork configurations. The 18 mm and 21 mm gauges are standard for wall, column, and slab formwork with conventional joist spacing. Contact Alvi-Bel to confirm current availability and lead times for your required thickness and bonding specification.
Surface Types and Materials
Both faces carry smooth film in equal weight, applied consistently across the full panel surface:
- Face side: Smooth film surface placed against the concrete pour. The closed film chemistry prevents water and cement paste from penetrating the surface, producing a consistent release across multiple pour cycles.
- Back side: Identical smooth film construction, allowing the panel to be turned after the working face shows wear. Rotating panels between pours is standard site practice that increases the number of usable cycles per sheet and reduces material cost over the course of a project.
Film colour and exact film weight are confirmed at the time of order. Contact Alvi-Bel for current specifications on available film configurations for the eucalyptus range.
For applications requiring an anti-slip surface on one face – ramps, platforms, or vehicle decking – wire mesh film faced plywood provides the F/W configuration. For the full range of smooth and textured film faced options across different core materials, the film faced plywood and film faced / laminated plywood categories cover available specifications.
Areas of Application
Smooth F/F eucalyptus film faced plywood is specified primarily in construction and formwork applications where the higher stiffness of the eucalyptus core provides a performance advantage over lower-density alternatives. Wall formwork, column boxing, beam sides, and slab soffit shuttering are the primary uses. The denser core is particularly valued in tall pour applications where hydrostatic pressure at the base of the form is significant, and in situations where panel spacing must be wider than standard to reduce the number of support members.
Beyond formwork, the phenolic-bonded eucalyptus panel is used in infrastructure and civil construction applications – bridge decking, tunnel lining forms, and heavy industrial shuttering – where dimensional stability, load resistance, and durability under repeated wet-dry cycling are critical. For exterior plywood applications requiring phenolic bonding without a film surface, the exterior plywood range provides appropriate bare-veneer alternatives. Where waterproof plywood is required for non-formwork construction uses, the waterproof category covers the relevant specifications.
Adhesive and Formaldehyde Emission
Phenolic or melaminic adhesive bonds all veneer layers in this panel, both systems rated to EN 314-2 Class 3 for fully exposed and wet service conditions. The adhesive maintains bond integrity through the alkaline chemistry of concrete contact, repeated site washing, and the moisture cycling that occurs across a construction season. Formaldehyde emission is within the E1 class range and CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI compliance is confirmed, supporting regulated market requirements in North America alongside European CE-compliant supply chains.
